Most common symptoms
Hard starting or a complete no-start, especially when the engine is cold, is one of the clearest injector-fault symptoms, because a worn or leaking injector can no longer build or hold the fuel pressure the engine needs to fire cleanly on the first crank. Vibration at idle that was not there before, felt through the cab floor or the steering wheel, usually means one or more cylinders is not receiving an even fuel charge. Power loss under load and a misfire that appears specifically under acceleration — smooth at a steady speed but rough when the driver asks for more power — both point to an injector that cannot deliver its full spray pattern at the higher pressures acceleration demands.
Black or white smoke from the exhaust, a steady rise in fuel consumption over recent weeks and combustion that sounds or feels rougher than normal also point to an injector or feed-pump problem rather than a mechanical engine fault. Black smoke generally means more fuel is being delivered than is being burned completely, while white smoke more often points to fuel that is not igniting properly at all — the two point toward different parts of the fuel system and should not be treated as interchangeable symptoms.
Likely causes
Poor-quality or contaminated fuel is one of the most common root causes, since even fine particulate matter can score the precision surfaces inside a modern injector and shorten its life dramatically faster than clean fuel would. A clogged injector nozzle restricts and distorts the spray pattern; a worn needle no longer seats cleanly and can dribble fuel into the cylinder outside the intended injection window; pressure loss anywhere in the supply line reduces the force behind atomisation; and in common-rail systems, electronic faults in the injector driver circuit or the engine control unit can misfire the injection timing even when the mechanical parts are sound.
Wear in the feed pump also lowers the pressure delivered to the injectors and affects their performance even when the injectors themselves are perfectly healthy, which is why a fault that looks like an injector problem from the driver’s seat sometimes turns out to originate further upstream in the supply chain. Because several of these causes can produce overlapping symptoms — a feed-pump fault and a clogged nozzle can both present as power loss under acceleration, for instance — accurate diagnosis requires evaluating the fuel system as a whole, checking pressure, timing and individual injector condition together, rather than replacing the first component that happens to look suspect during a quick visual check.

Light clogging, caught early before it affects the spray pattern significantly, may be solved by ultrasonic cleaning and recalibration of the spray pattern and opening pressure, which restores most of the injector’s original performance at a fraction of the cost of full replacement. More advanced wear — a scored needle, a worn seat or internal leakage that cleaning cannot correct because the underlying metal surfaces are already damaged — requires a full injector overhaul or outright replacement, since a worn precision component cannot be brought back to specification by cleaning alone no matter how thorough the process.
