Repair or overhaul?

A repair is the targeted replacement of one specific faulty component — a coil, a connector, a sensor, a single bearing — while leaving the rest of the unit exactly as it is, without disturbing parts that are still performing correctly. If the fault is genuinely isolated, meaning inspection confirms the surrounding components still test within specification rather than merely appearing fine on the surface, a repair is the faster and more cost-effective solution, since it avoids paying for parts and labour on components that are not actually worn and would only need to be reassembled again afterward.

An overhaul is a different scope of work entirely: it means stripping the whole unit down to its individual parts, replacing every worn critical part rather than just the one that failed first and happened to be the most visible symptom, and recalibrating the entire assembly together as a set once reassembly is complete. When several components are worn at once, when the unit has covered a high mileage since it was last opened for inspection, or when a fault keeps recurring shortly after isolated repairs — a sign that something beyond the part just replaced is also quietly degrading — an overhaul should be preferred over another round of spot repairs, because repairing one component at a time on a unit that actually needs a full overhaul just delays the same eventual labour cost while the vehicle keeps returning to the workshop for the same underlying reason.

Signs it is overhaul time

A fault that recurs soon after a repair is the clearest signal that the first repair addressed a visible symptom rather than the underlying wear driving it, and it is a strong indicator that more of the unit needs attention than the single part that was replaced. Simultaneous wear showing up across several components during inspection, constant overheating that does not resolve even after a single targeted fix, and braking force that keeps falling gradually even after individual repairs have been carried out — each of these signs on its own is a warning worth acting on, and together they signal clearly that overhaul time is near rather than another round of isolated repairs.

Ignored, these signs eventually put the fault out on the road, and almost always at the worst possible moment — mid-descent, under a full load, far from a workshop that could have caught it during a scheduled visit. A planned overhaul, scheduled deliberately for when the unit is already off the road for other maintenance, is always cheaper in total cost than the combination of a roadside breakdown, the recovery cost that follows it and the extended downtime that comes with an unplanned failure rather than a planned one.

What does an overhaul cover?

A thorough overhaul includes stripping the unit completely down to its component parts, inspecting and replacing worn rotor, bearing, seal and electrical components with original or remanufactured parts as needed rather than reusing anything borderline, and reassembling the unit with full recalibration rather than an approximate reassembly based on how the old unit looked before it came apart. Correct torque on every fastener and the correct air gap or oil fill, set to the manufacturer’s specified values rather than judged by feel or experience alone, are what actually determine how close the overhauled unit comes to its original factory performance — skipping this calibration step is the single most common reason an otherwise well-executed overhaul still underperforms once it is back in service.
