The first sign of a cooling system fault is usually the temperature gauge climbing above its normal range; on some vehicles this is also flagged directly by a warning light. Steam or white smoke from the front grille means there is a serious leak or the system is boiling, and the vehicle should be stopped immediately. Coolant level dropping repeatedly over a few weeks points to a loss somewhere even without a visible external leak — the loss can be heading into the engine oil rather than outside. A cream-coloured, frothy film on the dipstick or inside the oil filler cap indicates coolant is mixing with the oil, meaning a problem with the cylinder head gasket or the oil cooler. Weak cabin heating is often overlooked but can be an early sign of an airlock in the cooling circuit or a low fluid level.

A worn water pump seal leaves a constant trace of leakage below the pump shaft and gradually reduces flow, leaving the engine under-cooled. Radiator fins clogged from the outside with dust and debris, or scaled from the inside, reduce heat transfer and push temperature up especially under load at low speed. Cracks or swelling that build up in hoses over time can cause a sudden burst under pressure and a large fluid loss even without prior dripping.
