OM457 and OM460 share most gasket items

In the catalogue this family’s gasket items are generally listed together as "OM457 / OM460": most cylinder head, rocker cover, sump and manifold gaskets fit both engines. So there is no need to search separately for the OM460 — these are the same items. Set contents can still diverge, so the engine code should be stated when ordering rather than assuming "either will do".

EURO 3 and EURO 4/5 are not the same set

This is the most common mistake in 457 gasket orders. The engine code is given correctly, the emission class is skipped, and the set that arrives does not fit. The upper set contents and some gasket types differ between the EURO 3 and EURO 4/5 versions, and bus and truck applications differ as well. So when asking for a 457 set, state the emission class and the vehicle type together.

Upper gasket set

The upper set brings together the cylinder head area gaskets on a 457: head gasket, rocker cover gasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets and the related seals and O-rings. Whenever the head comes off, working from a set is both faster and safer than collecting gaskets one by one — a single missing gasket means opening the engine twice.

Cylinder head gasket and thickness grade

What decides the 457 head gasket is whether the head face has been machined before. On a skimmed head a standard thickness will not give correct clamping. If the engine history is unknown, the grade should not be chosen without measuring. Stud condition should also be checked when replacing a head gasket; a stretched stud will keep leaking even with the correct gasket fitted.

Sump, manifold and compressor side

On the 457 the sump gasket, oil cooler gasket and manifold gaskets are also available as separate items. On twin-head compressor Axor applications the compressor cover and throat sealing elements are frequently replaced; ordering these as an O-ring set produces fewer errors than collecting individual parts.

What to check? When ordering for a 457

With these three items ready the right set goes out first time: (1) emission class — EURO 3 or EURO 4/5, (2) vehicle type — tractor or bus, (3) whether the engine has been overhauled before. Can I fit a EURO 3 set to a EURO 4 vehicle?

It is not recommended. The usual cause of a mismatch is a correct engine code paired with a missing emission class: the code alone does not decide which set is correct. Fitting a EURO 3 set onto a EURO 4 engine carries a real risk that one or more gaskets will not seat correctly or seal properly, sending the vehicle back into the workshop a second time. The right approach is to confirm the vehicle's actual emission class and body type before ordering and state both with the engine code.
